California Motorcycle Insurance
California Insurance Requirements and Suggestions*
California required insurance for motorcyclists:
California does not require, under current laws, that you carry insurance on your California motorcycle. California does however require that people riding two-wheeled vehicles on public roads must show proof that they could cover the damages. California is NOT a No-Fault state.
California Insurance Requirements:
The California Financial Responsibility Law requires minimum insurance coverage with the following insurance coverage:
**Technically these do not apply to California Motorcyclists so contact your insurance agent to find out what coverage you need.
- Bodily Injury Liability (1 Person): $15,000
- Bodily Injury Liability (All Persons, 1 Accident): $30,000
- Property Damage Liability: $5,000
Some acceptable Proof of Financial Responsibility:**
- Provide a document or ID card from our insurance company stating you have adequate coverage.
- Provide DMV with an authorization letter if you made a cash deposit or if you are self-insured.
- Provide DMV with a California Proof of Insurance Caertificate (SR-22) for either broad coverage or owner's policy. If state determines you need to provide an SR-22 it will not suffice to provide on your operator's policy.
- Provide DMV with proof that the vehicle is publicly owned or leased (Government Code 811.2)
- Provide statement of facts proving you filed proof of insurance with the DMV or Public Utilities Commission pursuant to California Vehicle Code 34630
Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage
- If you are injured in a motorcycle accident, the negligent person's BI (Bodily Injury) liability coverage should pay your medical bills, lost wage and pain & suffering. Unfortunately, many times the bills exceed their policy, or maybe they just don’t have insurance at all. Protect yourself by having Uninsured Motorist coverage. This optional coverage will protect you and cover the difference in your bills. More often than not, BI policies are not enough to cover you.
- UM includes underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. In order to have this insurance, your UM has to be at least as much as bodily injury liability coverage purchased (usually $10,000), unless specifically rejected.
- This is NOT required, although we highly recommend it.
*Remember laws/requirements are subject to change and that we are merely suggesting this insurance coverage. We are not insurance agents so speak with your insurance agent to find out what policy will best protect you.
**Technically these do not apply to California Motorcyclists so contact your insurance agent to find out what coverage you need.
